| Eilat was omitted from public committee report on quality of tourism services and products submitted to Ministry of Tourism. Tel Aviv was chosen as the city in which a pilot would be run using the European model, to be followed by Tiberias, before nationwide implementation. This drew ire from representatives of tourism in Eilat, who feel that as a unique tourism resort, Eilat should have been chosen. The committee chairperson, Dr. Israel Peleg, based the choice on Tel Aviv’s being a large, central, and metropolitan area with services and activities that Eilat lacks to make it adequately representative for such a project. |

He included examples such as not being sure that Eilat is not up to the desired marketing efforts and interactive internet informational sites, lacks an adequate tourism police, doesn’t have a full array of public services, public transport, etc., and is also not very clean - thus making many of the model’s requirements not very applicable to Eilat. While it is true that Eilat doesn’t have all the amenities of a large city, some are not needed while others - such as a train - have been sought after for years while the government drags its feet. |
