Last week saw Eilat teeming with Arab visitors celebrating Id al Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice. The second of two major Islamic holidays, Id al Adha occurs after the Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). The holiday, in commemoration of the command given by Allah to the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his first born son Ishmael to Him, is celebrated by all Muslims for several days whether or not they made Hajj. Many of them from Israel and elsewhere chose to celebrate it in Eilat.

Eilat Today asked several of the visitors why they chose to come to Eilat during this holiday. One family, whom I met while being invited for a friend to have supper at KFC, agreed to an interview and a photograph.
Shourouk and Amdallah live with their two children in the village of Kalanswa, in the Kfar Saba area. They came with their little daughter to spend the holiday in Eilat, leaving their 4 month old son back home with Grandma. This is not their first visit to Eilat, although Amdalla has been here more often than his wife, and has been in Sharm el Sheikh as well, which he also likes for its beauty and its affordable prices. When asked why they chose Eilat to spend the holiday, they answered that everything is pleasant here, nice, Eilat has everything, they enjoy the scenery and all the things to do. When asked what could use improvement, they couldn’t think of anything and said “No, everything is fine for us.” |
