Starting in December, Israel's Israir airlines will be offering two direct flights Thailand, one to Bangkok and the other to Phuket.  The latter will be the only direct flight to Phuket offered by any operator.

The flights, on Airbus A-330 aeroplanes, will be available from 15 December through 28 February.  One flight a week will leave to and return from each city, and passengers can fly to one while returning from the other if they choose.

According to Israir's commercial director, Shai Marina, there is a high demand for direct flights to Thailand at affordable prices, and combining the two destinations will save Israeli travelers an internal flight and give them more flexibility during their stay in Thailand.

There are also kibbutzes in the southern Arava and most likely additional areas that employ Thai workers, who come to Israel to work for a couple of years and send money home to improve their families' lot.  The new flight routes may also help them when wishing to visit their families so far away.
