Sdeh Dov Airport is closed to domestic flights between Eilat and Tel Aviv (as well as other routes), for the next two months.  Flights will be going through Ben Gurion Airport, Terminal 1, instead.  Below is information received by the Eilat Tourist Office from the Airports Authority regarding public transportation from Terminal 1:

1.  Shuttle to Terminal 3 - Each time a flight lands there will be a shuttle at the exit from the right that goes to Terminal 3 or to the train station free of charge.

2.  Train - At two trains per hour leave the train station at Terminal 3 to Tel Aviv and northward.  The train schedule can be found at the website: www.israrail.org.il .

3.  Taxis - Taxis wait at the terminal's opening after every flight (next to the usher's station).

4.  Egged busses - Bus no. 5 passes through every 10-15 minutes returning from Terminal 3 and heading to Airport City (the station is across the road).  A ticket for the final destination can be purchased there.  Airport City has stations for destinations such as Tel Aviv, Lod, Ramleh, Petach Tikvah, and Jerusalem.  For timetables, you can ring Egged Information at tel. *2800 or 03-6948888 or see their website: www.egged.co.il .

5.  Car hire - At the exit from the incoming travellers' hall there is a Shlomo Sixt car hire counter.  There is long- and short-term parking directly opposite the terminal for a fee.

Additional information about Terminal 1 can be found at the Airports Authority's website - Ben Gurion Airport, at:

The closure, in order to do renovations that are vital to improving the safety of Sdeh Dov Airport such as replacing all the runway lights, is scheduled to last for approximately two months.  The replacement of the lighting will be carried out by the air force, funded jointly with the Airports Authority.  The general director of the Airports Authority, Kobi Mor, points out that Sdeh Dov serves around 750,000 domestic passengers annually and that replacement of the runway lighting, at a cost of 4 million NIS, is vital to ensure safety.

Terminal 1 at Ben Gurion Airport, which was readied this summer for international activity, will serve Israel's domestic flights during the anticipated closure of Sdeh Dov.  It is noted that the Airport Authorities council and management had decided to move forward the activity of Terminal 1 to the coming summer in order to expand Israel's airport capacity. Airport authorities had decided to allocate over one milliard NIS to upgrading safety, including building a new control tower and upgrading the runways at Ben Gurion airport.
