Israel's Minister of Tourism, Ruhama Avraham-Belila, sent letters in August to her counterparts in neighbouring countries, with an unusual touch:  Like her, Jordan's Maha al-Khatib and Palestine's Dr. Khouloud Daibes are both women.  Avraham-Belila used the common ground of all three tourism ministers being female as a potentially ‘excellent opportunity' to create cooperation between the three countries in the realm of tourism.

"Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority can cooperate as neighbours and regional partners, thus promoting tourism in the area and assisting the region's economy and image as a tourist destination," wrote Avraham-Belila, concluding with hopes for a trilateral meeting that she had already set the gears in motion toward coordinating.

While we’re all familiar with politicians’ rhetoric and gimmicks, there is enough actual research in psychology and other fields to suggest that women are in fact better suited toward cooperation and non-aggressive means of solving problems.  So let us hope that these three women will indeed work together to benefit all three of our regions.
