A report just published by the Hotels Association reveals that January through July 2008 showed a 25% growth in hotel occupancy in Eilat by foreign tourists compared to the same period last year.  Foreign tourists constitute only 15% of the total visitors, whereas previous to 2000 they constituted 35%.  This July, they constituted only 6%, while Israeli tourism (as every summer) increased.

Average hotel occupancy during that period was 67%, compared with 65% last year but 69% the year before during the same periods.   During those seven months this year there were 3.2 million guests, of which 482,000 were foreign tourists and the rest Israelis.

The average occupancy of 5-star hotels during the period in question was 87%, while that of 2-3 star ones was 82%.  Occupancy can be misleading as an indicator of quality, however, as it can also reflect such things as special offers attracting guests.  Israelis tend to prefer the more expensive hotels, it appears, as indicated by the July figures which reflect the height of the Israeli tourist season for which figures are available.  During July, the hotel with highest occupancy was the Caesar Premiere, with 97% occupancy of which 98% comprised Israelis.  Second was the Holitel Siesta with 96% occupancy, all of it Israeli, followed by Club Inn with 94% occupancy of which 79% were Israelis - many French were staying there.  Next was Dan Panorama with 93% occupancy (91% of it Israelis), and fifth place was shared by Meridien and Nova, with 92% (94% and 97%, respectively, of which was Israelis).
