Some 1800 athletes will be gathering in Eilat on 28-29 November 2008 to participate in the biggest sport competition of the year - the 22nd traditional annual Triathlon.  Athletes from all over Israel and the world will participate in the year's greatest sport event that combines competitions in swimming, running, and bicycling.  The event is held under the auspices of the Israeli Triathlon Association, Isrotel Hotel Chain's Sport Club Hotel, and the Eilat Municipality, Sports Division.

In order to accommodate the runners and bicyclists, some of the roads in the hotels area of Eilat will be closed for short periods as well as the Arava Road.  The organisers request that all visitors and residents note the closures and plan their driving accordingly.  The public is gladly invited to come out and cheer the athletes on along their route.

Thursday 27 Nov.:

Smolyan road between King City and Sport Club Hotel will be closed already from Thursday November 27th and traffic will be detoured around King City park to a parallel road east of it.

Friday 28 Nov.:

The takeoff for the swimming competition is at 07:15 AM from the Royal Beach beach, followed immediately thereafter by the running and bicycle competitions.

From  07:00 am - 12:00 noon Smolyan Rd, Kampen Rd, and Durban Rd leading around the east side of the airport will be closed.

The Arava Road will be closed from the traffic circle at the entrance of town through Be'er Ora.  Entry to/exit from Eilat will not be possible via the Arava Road and the alternative route through Shizafon junction, Uvda, and Netafim Pass will have to be employed during those hours.

Saturday 29 Nov:

Start-off at 07:00 AM from the Royal Beach beach.

From 07:00 - 12:00 noon the following roads will be closed off as per the bicycle route:  Exit from Royal Beach via Smolyan, Kampen and Durban roads (eastern road around hotels) up to Toronto traffic circle.

The Arava Road will be open to traffic into and out of Eilat on this day.

The road closures will be absolute and no entry or exit of vehicles will be permitted.  Drivers are requested to prepare themselves accordingly and use the alternate routes for travel.  Pedestrians will be allowed to cross only at marked spots.   On both days exit from hotels on Kampen Rd will be possible through the parking lots and through the western traffic circle near the airport fence.  Derech Hayam Road will be converted to a 2-way road to allow exit from the hotel area starting from the Sport Hotel but will be closed completely between the Sport Hotel and the Dan Hotel.

As part of the preparations for the Triathlon, the Sports Division has distributed letters to all the hotels in Eilat and the border crossings regarding the road closures.
