wolf_face_tongue_tiny.jpg   An air force base at Uvda was infiltrated by a ‘terrorist' of a different sort - not the sort that wants to massacre humans or even steal military secrets.  Rather, the Little Red Riding Hood sort, which has always suffered very bad press.  [read more]
The air force family residential quarters at Uvda was thrown into a panic by visitors of the Canis lupus variety.  The Big Bad Wolves, however, contrary to popular legend, do not seek human prey, but rather animals to provide their sustenance - usually the weaker or sicker of the herd, leaving the stronger ones intact to pass on their genes.  Families and soldiers living at the compound, however, seemed not to be aware of this fact and found the unwanted visitors very upsetting.  Sadly, the wolves did apparently attack some pet animals.

The base commanders called in the Wolf Busters in the form of the Nature Reserves and Parks Authority (NRPA), who sent out special rangers that employed a series of means involving loud noise and pyrotechnics in order to scare the wolves out of the compound and deter them from wishing to return.

According to the manager of NRPA Eilat region, Guy Alon, immediately upon hearing from the army about the problem a couple of weeks ago, the NRPA sent out the special rangers to the military base to deal with the wolves.  Each night the rangers activated a system of megaphones and noise, sirens and horns, to drive away the wolves.  They also set off fireworks, flares, and gunshots to scare them off.

"The desert is their area, we are the invaders there, and we have no intention of hurting the wolves, only teaching them where we set the red line for them and new behavioural rules for them that will let the humans continue living there without fear," Alon said.  He added that there has already been some change in the wolves' behaviour and he believes that in a couple more weeks the wolves will internalise the new arrangements and no longer come close to the family residential quarters.
