For many years now, for as long as I can remember, the first sign that
winter is coming happens on Sukkot. The fist  raindrops come during the late afternoon or early evening.

Most Eilatis are thrilled when the skies turn dark grey in hope the clouds will open up and saturate our little city. Last year on Sukkot it drizzled and that's about all it did the whole year. Eilat might have gotten another drizzle or two but, none that could be considered wetting the entire town. If it does happen to "rain" while the town sleeps, the only way of knowing it is from the marks the drops leave on the cars and their windows.

Maybe this winter we'll be luckier. For those of you that experience four wonderful changing seasons you might not understand the longing for rain. Here in Eilat we have sun almost 365 days. Autum, that is what i consider our winter, only because it's still warm enough to wear a t-shirt during the day. Then gradually it gets warmer and wham, summer is upon us once again. On those very rare occasions when it's cloudy, I know I am one of the many hoping it will rain. There is something different in the air and the movement around you.

I've almost forgotten how different the air smells after a rain. Everything becomes refreshed with that cleansing. Don't get me wrong, I'll take a total of five days a year with a good rainfall rather than weeks of it with cold dark gloomy days. Another wonderful thing about Eilat and rain is the spectacular rainbows that come afterwards. They truly stop traffic and seem so close that you want to reach out and touch it. A wonderful perk to living in Eilat. And yes, you can throw in some thunder and lightning too. What's a storm without it?
