After years of the Port seeming to recede from the forefront of Eilat's economy, the renewal of Zim shipping to Eilat means new life for the Port.  Last month the Port started a campaign to recruit tens of new employees in anticipation of the renewed container shipping.  At a time when most of the economy is talking of cutbacks and layoffs, the Eilat Port is taking on workers in a variety of different jobs (operations, purchasing, accounting, and more).  At the time of the notice (end of November 2008) over 300 applicants had undergone initial testing and interviews and some 30 new employees were due to begin work at the Port.   Adv. Yair Hazan, chairman of the Port's board, said that "this is a certificate of honour for the Eilat Port Company that so many people are interested in working for it."  Hazan added that he feels great satisfaction that the Port of Eilat is capable of taking on new employees during this time and that in spite of the recession, activity at the Port is expanding due to the renewal of the container ship line.
