France Week in Eilat opens this evening at 19:00 at the Ben Gurion University Eilat Campus.

The fragrances of the French kitchen, the chansons, the films, the books, the language, the people - Eilat celebrates a whole week of French culture with love during 14-20 September, 2008.

According to the French Consulate General, there are around 1,200 French families registered in Eilat and it is estimated that there are several hundred more families living in Eilat that are not registered.

The initiative is welcomed by Eilat's Sister City in France, Antibes, which has sent its own contribution to the event:  the French chef Christian Bloncherie, who during the week will be giving cooking lessons to the students studying at the Ben Gurion University Eilat Campus.  In addition, each day a lunch will be served from the French chef's kitchen at the ‘Bein Hasirim' restaurant on the campus.  The meals, prepared under tutelage of chef Levi Ochayon and the guest chef from Antibes, cost 36 NIS.

During the week several additional events will be held under the aegis of the Eilat Municipality, Fattal hotel chain, Eilat Theatres, Hagoren Club, Yotam Plant Nursery, the French Cultural Centre, and the Ben Gurion University Eilat Campus.

 

Sunday 14.9 at 19:00 - Talking about everything in French Opening of the France Week with a festive cocktail party attended by the mayor of Eilat, Meir Itzhak Halevi, the General Consul of France, Colette Labroun, and the French Consul in Eilat, Dr. Avi Baranes.  After the cocktail party an open discussion will be held in French. 

Monday 15.9 and Tuesday 16.9 - French cinema for children and adultsEvenings of French film at the Eilat Theatres (films in French with Hebrew translation).  Tickets cost 15 NIS.  Children will be entertained at the site by the Club Med entertainment crew.  Monday will also include a lecture at 19:30 about the French cinema by Toby Natan, French cultural attaché.  

Wednesday 17.9 at 21:00 - “Please sing a message” - musical theatre performance at Eilat Theatres, presenting the ups and downs experienced by French immigrants.  Tickets: 25 NIS. 

Friday 19.9 at 17:30 - Ushering in the Sabbath.  Kabalat Shabbat in French atmosphere at Village Beach, entrance free. 

Saturday 29.9 at 20:30 - Chansons and other love songs, evening of French-Hebrew song at Hagoren Club, entrance free.  France Week will also include diving courses in French at the Dolphin Reef and at Divers’ Village, and discounts to bearers of a French passport at the Kings’ City and Underwater Observatory attractions.
