The Eilat Port Company has made an agreement with the Zim Shipping Company that Zim will recommence working with the Eilat Port, after Zim's having cancelled its container ship line to Eilat in July 2007.  Two to three ships will visit the port each month and Port workers will handle around 2,000 containers a month, between 20,000 and 30,000 containers a year.

The first container ship is expected to arrive at the port in about a month.  The decision to use the Eilat port was reached after contacts made by the Port's Chairman of the Board, Adv. Yair Hazan, with the directors of the Zim company.

The container ships are slated to arrive from southern and central Africa, and the possibility to open additional routes in the future is presently being examined.  The decision to reinstate container activity at the Eilat Port requires the management of the port to make special preparations by recruiting additional personnel and purchasing advanced and appropriate equipment.

The Port's chairman of the Board, Adv. Yair Hazan, pointed out, "This is a meaningful strategic development for the Port of Eilat. This is excellent news for the Eilat Port and its employees.  This agreement can be solidified into a long-term one if the State gives the Eilat Port back the land-shipping subsidy due to the distance to the centre of the county that it stopped in 2006."

Hazan continued, "The Port of Eilat is a strategic asset for the State of Israel and comprises its southern gateway.  Returning the container activity to the port constitutes a breakthrough enabling the Port and its staff to use the skills they acquired over the years.  This is undoubtedly a major achievement and we plan to use the ‘drawer plan' that includes purchase of advanced equipment and upgrading of existing equipment in order to give the Zim company professional and efficient service and in order to lead toward the opening of additional routes."
