The biggest shark known to man, the whale shark, was seen in different parts of the bay by divers last week.  But not to worry - due to its vegetarian menu (it is a filter-feeder), this shark is considered ‘friendly'.  The whale shark was seen near the fish cages and near a dive site by the Coral Reserve.  These sharks usually come to the Gulf of Eilat during April through June in search of plankton, tiny plant organisms they enjoy eating, that flourish in the water here during those months.  Whale sharks, able to reach up to 20 metres in length, are the largest of all fish and are listed as "vulnerable to extinction" by the World Conservation Union.
