Although Israel's own vineyards are at the northernmost end of the country, the Terra Vino international wine competition for 2008 was held last month in Israel's southernmost city, Eilat.  The competition, the only international competition of its size taking place in Israel, is the third such event held annually in Eilat under the auspices of OIV, the international body responsible for setting the standards of the competition.  668 wines from 30 countries around the world participated in the event.  45 judges, some from Israel and some from abroad, were appointed to taste the wines in a controlled and precise blind testing.

Har Odem vineyards took three medals in the Terra Vino 2008 competition, held in mid-November at Isrotel's King Solomon Hotel in Eilat.  The double gold medal was won by the Har Odem merlot 2005 and by a blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot, while the cabernet sauvignon 2006 from the same series won the silver medal.  Combined with wins in previous years, this achievement enhances Har Odem wineries' status and places it as a leading family boutique winery in Israel.

The Alfasi family, which owns the Har Odem winery, makes the journey to Eilat annually to participate in the competition.  Vintner Shai Alfasi believes that such a high level international competition sets a quality standard for Israeli wineries in general and for Har Odem in particular, allowing for growth and the achievement of impressive results.  He added that this year's grape harvest was of especially good quality and he is eagerly anticipating the wine that will be made from those grapes in the future.
