Representatives of the political parties in Eilat reached a decision to not display election propaganda signs in public places until after the High Holidays.  The general director of the Municipality, Avi Cohen, who also serves as secretary of the City Council, held a meeting with the party representatives in order to decide on a joint policy regarding display of propaganda signs for the 2008 elections.

Attending the meeting last Monday (18.8.08) with Avi Cohen were Gabi Erez from Tnufa, Ofer Avraham from Kivun Hadash, Oleg Chernomorts from Eilat Beitenu, Yosef Shachaf from Yam, Hertzl Hano from Or Le'eilat, Ayush Elimelkh from Likud, and city secretary Henriette Zino.

“Display of propaganda signs all over town shows, on one hand, expression of a democratic process, but on the other hand, it creates a lot of foulness throughout the city as well as considerable financial outlays both for the candidates and for the Municipality,” Cohen stated, adding that it should be remembered that the height of the election campaign will be falling during the High Holidays, a period when the city is hosting hundreds of thousands of Israelis and foreign tourists. All the party representatives accepted what the general director of the Municipality said and agreed not to display signs in any public places, but only on residential homes, until after the High Holidays.  Representatives of the parties not present at the meeting, Moshe Elmakias from Yachad and Uri Shayish from Ima, accepted the decision made by their colleagues. Next month an additional discussion will be held regarding the period of time between the High Holidays and the elections.
